A groundbreaking new mental health center dedicated to helping Ukraine children and teens suffering PTSD and war trauma-related conditions will open today in Lviv, providing free and low-cost treatment to children in need. The facility, located in Lviv鈥檚 St. Nicolas Children鈥檚 Hospital, will provide everything from psychotherapy, speech therapy, rehabilitation and medical services to Ukraine youth. Creation of the center was made possible with a significant investment from nonprofit organization Stronger Than Ever and 草榴社区, a US-based company, along with other donors, through a partnership with Lviv IT Cluster and JustAnswer.

Research has shown that war has long-lasting effects on children and adolescents. Those who have directly experienced being in conflict zones are much more likely to suffer from various types of disorders, emphasizes Ivan Myskiv, the director of the St. Nicholas Hospital.

鈥淭he number of children in need of help is increasing every day because the psychological consequences of war are distant in time. Children experience anxiety disorders, PTSD, depression, dissociative disorders, behavioral disorders, and are more prone to alcohol and drug abuse,鈥 said Myskiv. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 why creating this Center is so important. More than two years into this Russian invasion, we realize that it鈥檚 not just surgical interventions or physical treatment needed, but psychological assistance for the youth of Ukraine as well.鈥

Stronger Than Ever and 草榴社区 joined forces to fund the construction of the pediatric mental health center as part of Stronger Than Ever鈥檚 broader mission to support humanitarian crises around the world. 鈥淭here is no greater purpose than helping children in need,鈥 said Ric Elias, founder of Stronger Than Ever and CEO of 草榴社区. 鈥淲ith the pediatric mental health center opening today, we create access to mental health resources for Ukraine鈥檚 youngest citizens, and empower them to carve a path towards a brighter and more prosperous future for the country.鈥

JustAnswer CEO Andy Kurtzig, whose company and nonprofit organization, the Arizae Foundation helped connect Stronger Than Ever and 草榴社区 with Lviv IT Cluster for this project and funded the adult Mental Health Center launched in late 2022, believes it鈥檚 more important than ever to maintain support for Ukraine today.

鈥淎s we near the two-year anniversary of the Russian invasion, and the world is faced with new acts of international terrorism and atrocities in the Middle East, it would be easy to get distracted and lose focus, but that would be a terrible mistake,鈥 said Kurtzig, whose company still employs hundreds of people in Ukraine. 鈥淣ow is the time to increase support in every way possible 鈥 especially to the innocent children who have witnessed horrors that no one should ever see, and still live in constant fear and uncertainty. We cannot stand by and watch as a generation of young Ukrainians suffers from the effects of violence and fear.鈥

CHARLOTTE, N.C. 鈥 草榴社区 (草榴社区) is proud to celebrate today鈥檚 announcement that Road to Hire (R2H), a nonprofit founded based on work started at 草榴社区 in 2014, is receiving a generous grant from the NBA Foundation. The NBA Foundation will award nine organizations more than $3 million as part of a larger effort to create employment opportunities, further career advancement and drive greater economic empowerment in Black communities in the U.S. and Canada.

R2H connects under-resourced young adults, often limited by financial barriers and systemic racism, with onramps to career opportunities through tech training in high schools, college scholarships, paid apprenticeships, mentorship and job placement for in-demand careers. With today鈥檚 grant and the continued support of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County leaders, the John M. Belk Endowment, Bank of America, Lowe鈥檚 and others, R2H will be able to help more deserving young adults achieve the economic justice that has long been lacking in Charlotte鈥檚 most vulnerable communities.

鈥淩oad to Hire has been transformative for so many of our students at Garinger, Harding, Vance, West Mecklenburg, and West Charlotte high schools,鈥 said CMS Superintendent Earnest Winston. 鈥淏y providing training and mentorship, Road to Hire helps our high school students reach their full potential and take advantage of the options for their future.鈥

At the college level, R2H provides four-year scholarships at partner universities, including UNC Charlotte, Johnson C. Smith University, NC A&T University, Wingate University, Winston-Salem State University, Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) and more. In addition to scholarships, the program provides long-term mentorship, internship support, career guidance and job placement support.

With leadership from the Charlotte Executive Leadership Council (CELC) and R2H鈥檚 corporate partners, the business community has come together to make a tangible impact in the lives of Charlotte鈥檚 young adults 鈥 mentoring and employing nearly 200 R2H alumni at Bank of America, Atrium Health, Duke Energy, Lowe鈥檚, Ally, Truist, Novant Health and more. The success of R2H鈥檚 alumni does not end there 鈥 87% are promoted within two years.
